Mange husker mundheldet:  Spildte guds ord på Balle-Lars eller bare Spildte ord på Balle-Lars. Talemåden bruges om en person, som ikke vil tage imod fornuft. Men hvem var Balle-Lars? Hvorfor bliver han husket for de spildte ord? Mit essay og billederne kaster et poetisk-nutidigt blik på livet for en fattig kriminel mand, der levede omkring midten af 1800-tallet, indtil han blev henrettet for et lejemord på en kvinde. Personen Lars bliver synliggjort, hans baggrund, folk omkring ham, krigen og kærligheden. I 1861, året efter at Lars - som den næstsidste i Danmark - bliver henrettet, udgiver præsten Gjellebøl, en lille bog om sine samtaler med Balle-Lars op til henrettelsen. Gjellebøls bog har været en vigtig inspirationskilde for mig. Præstø og omegn udgør de visuelle rammer for historien.

Many Danish people will remember the saying: 'Wasted words of God on Balle-Lars' or just 'Wasted words on Balle-Lars'. The saying is used about a person who will not accept sense. But who was Balle-Lars? Why is he remembered for the wasted words? My essay and the pictures cast a poetic-contemporary look on the life of a poor criminal man who lived around the mid-1800s until he was executed for a woman's murder. The person Lars is made visible, his background, the people around him, the war and the love. In 1861, the year after Lars - as the penultimate in Denmark - is executed, the priest Gjellebøl publishes, a small book about his conversations with Balle-Lars up to the execution. Gjellebøl's book has been an important source of inspiration for me. Præstø and its surroundings provide the visual framework for the story.
